Rick Thompson, Director of Photography, Editor, Collaborator
Rick is demanding, especially of himself. And yet, you’d be hard pressed to find a more accommodating DP, whether it’s another line read or an entirely new set up. If the project needs it, he’ll make it happen.
And forget trying to boil him down to a single style or kind of shoot. Rick brings experience from the ad agency TV commercial arena as well as the documentary industry (Frontline, History Channel, Discovery, National Geographic). "I find that one experience feeds off the other—the demands of documentary production make me faster in the studio and the quality and values of commercial production show in our documentary work; it’s a fabulous combination," says Rick.
He shoots from the shoulder, the hip, a jib, crane or dolly. In studios or on location. From the air or underground. He shoots 30-second stories or two hour retrospectives. Tears or smiles. Scripts or reality. National celebrities, district sales managers or the guy next door.
Whatever the subject, Rick always shoots with editorial design in mind. While it may seem unusual to some that a DP is also an editor, it’s a labor of love for Rick. When you think about it, who better to help with crafting your story than the person who shot it.
Clients remember Rick, not only because he always delivers a quality product on time and on budget, but because he believes that relationships aren’t formed around single-sentence personalities. They’re built on respect, appreciation and friendship.
